So, is this worth your time today? If you like those old-fashioned stories where the plot depends on someone being really bad at recognizing faces, then yes. 🎭
It is a light, airy movie that feels like eating a piece of cake that is mostly frosting. People who want deep, dark German expressionism will probably hate how cheerful this is.
Mady Christians is the star here and she is just *magnetic*. She has these eyes that seem to sparkle even in a grainy black and white print. ✨
The whole premise is that she is rich but she falls for a guy who apparently has a thing against wealthy women. So she pretends to be her own sister who works in a shop. 👠
It is the kind of lie that would last five minutes in real life. But in this movie, it stretches out and gets more and more ridiculous.
The music professor guy, played by Igo Sym, is a bit of a stick in the mud. He is very serious and you kind of wonder why she likes him so much. Maybe it is the hair? 💇♂️
There is a scene in a small room where they are talking—well, gesturing—and the chemistry is actually pretty sweet. It made me think of Love and Kisses but with a bit more European flair.
Jakob Tiedtke shows up and he is basically the MVP of every scene he is in. He has this very round, expressive face that does all the work for him. 🥔
I noticed that in the background of one scene, there is a poster on the wall that looks half-peeled off. It felt real, like they didn't have a huge budget to make everything look perfect.
The pacing is a bit weird in the middle. It feels like they had a few extra minutes of film and just decided to let the actors walk around a bit too much. 🚶♀️
It is definitely not as heavy or political as something like Slesar i kantsler. It just wants you to be happy for an hour.
I liked the costumes a lot. Mady Christians wears this one hat that looks like a giant mushroom, and somehow she makes it look high fashion. 🍄
One thing that bothered me was a reaction shot near the end. It lingers on the professor's face for way too long while he realizes he's been tricked. It almost becomes a horror movie for a second because he just *stares*.
But then it gets funny again. The movie is at its best when it stops trying to be a romance and just leans into the absurdity of the situation.
If you have seen The Little Girl Next Door, you might find this one a bit more sophisticated, even if it is still a bit silly. 👧
The sets are actually pretty nice for 1929. The shop feels crowded and messy in a way that feels very authentic to the time period.
I caught myself smiling at the screen during the finale. It is hard not to, honestly. 😊
The ending happens very fast. Like, one second they are arguing and the next second it is over. I wish they had one more scene to let the air out of the room.
Anyway, it is a good pick if you want something easy. Just don't expect it to change your life or anything. 📽️
It's a solid little film. Better than a lot of the dry stuff from that era. 🍿
