7.1/10

A definitive 7.1/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Mickey's Service Station remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Look, if you want a 1935 cartoon that’ll make your blood pressure spike for seven minutes straight, you’re in the right place. Anyone who grew up with the classic trio will get a kick out of it. If you’re looking for a relaxing, slow-burn narrative, stay far, far away. This is pure, unadulterated noise. 🔧
The whole premise is just a ticking clock. Pete shows up, his car is a wreck, and the boys have ten minutes. That’s it. That’s the movie.
It’s kind of funny how Mickey is always the guy trying to hold it together while the other two are just spinning their wheels. Donald is, well, Donald—he’s basically one minor inconvenience away from a total mental breakdown. Watching him fight a car engine is like watching a man fight a swarm of bees with a wrench.
The animation here is sharp. Like, really sharp. There’s a bit where Goofy gets tangled up in the mechanics and it feels like he’s actually made of rubber and bad intentions. You don’t get that kind of kinetic energy in modern stuff. It’s all physics-defying nonsense and it’s great.
The middle act is just them wrestling the car. It’s a mess of gears, springs, and Donald’s signature screaming. I counted at least three moments where I thought the engine was literally going to explode and take the whole building with it. It didn't, but the suspense—if you can call it that—was surprisingly effective.
It reminded me a bit of the frantic energy in Go West, though obviously a different kind of animal. Everything moves too fast to really process, and the sound effects are just relentless.
The climax is loud. Very loud. It’s not subtle, and it doesn't try to be. One reaction shot of Pete waiting in the car lasts just long enough to make you feel as impatient as he is. It’s a nice little touch.
If you have ten minutes and need a distraction, this works. It’s not exactly The Four Feathers in terms of scale, but it doesn't need to be. It’s just a garage, three guys, and a car that refuses to cooperate. Maybe skip it if you’re trying to nap. 🏎️
