You should probably watch this today if you have twenty minutes to kill and you don't mind the grainy, scratchy look of 1920s film. It's great for people who like seeing how child stars started out, but if you hate slapstick or kids screaming (even silently), you will probably want to skip it.
Mickey Rooney is so tiny here. He is playing Mickey McGuire, and he already has this insane energy that makes the other kids look like they are standing still.
The plot is kind of thin, honestly. It is basically about the gang trying to win some kind of race or contest, but mostly it is just an excuse for them to run through backyards and knock things over.
I noticed one kid in the background of the big group scene who just looks completely lost. He’s just staring at the camera while everyone else is supposed to be cheering.
It makes the whole thing feel real, though. Like they just grabbed a bunch of neighborhood kids and told them to go nuts while the camera was rolling.
The dog in this movie is probably the best actor. It has this suspicious look on its face every time Mickey gets close, which made me laugh harder than the actual jokes.
Some of the gags feel a bit recycled if you’ve seen things like The Strong Man. But since these are kids, it feels a little more dangerous and messy.
I like how dirty their faces are. Not like "movie dirt" that looks like makeup, but actual 1920s backyard grime.
Jimmy Robinson is also a standout here. He’s got this great timing that feels much more natural than some of the older actors in movies like A Dollar's Worth.
There is a moment where a fence collapses and I am 90% sure it wasn't supposed to happen like that. The kids all look genuinely surprised for a split second before they keep going.
The editing is a bit jumpy. Sometimes a character is on one side of the yard and then, bam, they are suddenly ten feet away in the next shot.
It’s not trying to be a masterpiece. It feels like someone took notes on what makes kids funny and just filmed it as fast as possible before the sun went down.
If you compare it to something like Pedigreedy, it’s much more grounded because it’s live action, even if the physics still feel like a cartoon sometimes.
I did find myself wondering how many times they had to wash those costumes. They look like they haven't seen soap in a month.
The title "Triumph" feels a bit heavy for what actually happens. It’s more like a "Mickey's Mild Success at Not Dying," but I guess that wouldn't sell as many tickets back then.
One reaction shot of a lady in a hat lingers for way too long. It starts to feel awkward after about five seconds, like the director forgot to yell cut.
But overall? It’s charming. It’s got that weird, jagged rhythm of old silent shorts where everything is a little too fast and everyone is moving like they drank way too much coffee. ☕
It’s a short watch. It won't change your life, but it’s a fun little time capsule of a kid who was clearly born to be in front of a camera.
Just don't expect a deep story. It’s just kids, dirt, and a very confused dog. 🐶
