5.4/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Mind Your Business remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Is this movie worth your time today? If you like old-school chaos and people in bad disguises, then yes. If you need a movie to actually make sense, you will probably hate this one. 🤷♂️
It’s a very fast watch from 1930. Robert Agnew plays this guy who is having a really bad day.
He loses his job in real estate. Then his girl leaves him. Most people would just cry or get a drink, but he decides to put on a wig.
He ends up at this big dance for customers. He's pretending to be a female singer to win everyone back. It's a very specific plan that wouldn't work in real life, but movies back then didn't care.
The way he walks in those heels is actually pretty funny. He looks like he’s trying to balance on two toothpicks. 👠
I noticed the crowd in the background looks a bit confused. Like they weren't told a man in a dress would be the main event.
Dorothy Gulliver is in this too. She mostly just has to look pretty and be shocked when the truth comes out. She does the "shocked face" very well, even if it feels a bit much.
The sets look like they were built in about twenty minutes. Especially the office at the start. It's just a desk and a very empty wall.
It reminded me a little of She Couldn't Say No. Both movies have that weird energy where the characters just do things because the script says so.
There is a scene where he almost gets caught in the dressing room. The tension is supposed to be high, but the music is so jaunty it feels like a cartoon. I think I liked that part the most.
Sometimes the film feels like it’s missing a few pages of the script. One minute he is sad, the next he is a professional performer. There is no middle part.
The humor is very physical. Lots of tripping and funny looks. It’s not as smart as One Week, but it tries its best to be loud.
I wonder if the actors knew how silly it looked. Agnew has this look in his eyes sometimes like he's about to laugh at himself.
It has that same goofy vibe as Noisy Noises. Just a lot of movement and not much deep thinking.
The ending happens so fast you might blink and miss it. Everything just... fixes itself. 🪄
I guess if you can trick a whole room of people by wearing a dress, you deserve to get your job back. That’s the lesson here, maybe.
It’s not a masterpiece like Queen Kelly, but it’s a fun little relic. It’s the kind of thing you watch when you want to see how weird early talkies could be.
The sound quality is a bit scratchy. You have to lean in to hear some of the jokes. But the visual gags are easy enough to follow.
Overall, it’s just a weird little slice of history. It won't change your life, but it might make you giggle at the wig. 🤡
