6.4/10

A definitive 6.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Ang aswang remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Should you watch Ang Aswang? If you are a fan of old-school, grounded horror that relies on heavy shadows and creepy folklore instead of cheap CGI, yes. If you need a movie to keep you awake with loud noises and fast cuts, stay away. This is for the weirdos who like feeling like they’re watching something they weren't supposed to find in the attic.
There’s a certain weight to the way this film moves. It doesn't rush to show you the monster. It prefers to let the silence sit there for a beat too long, which, honestly, is where the movie finds its pulse. Celia Burgos-Xerxes is just… something else here. She carries a look in her eyes that makes you feel like the walls are closing in, even when she’s just standing in a kitchen.
I noticed a specific scene where someone is walking through the brush at night. The sound design is surprisingly raw. You hear every twig snap, and it’s not polished like modern sound mixes. It feels like the microphones were hidden in the leaves. It creates this odd, invasive feeling that stuck with me long after I stopped watching.
It reminds me a bit of the suffocating, quiet dread you find in Night After Night, though the two films couldn't be more different in setting. There’s that same sense that someone is watching, even when the frame is empty.
It’s not a perfect movie. Sometimes the pacing drags so much it feels like the reel is getting stuck. There are moments where I felt like the movie was trying a little too hard to convince me that a specific tree was scary. We get it, the tree is spooky. Move on.
Still, there's something about Mary Walter’s presence that keeps the whole thing from falling apart. She brings this gravity that anchors the stranger, more supernatural elements. It’s the kind of performance that makes you realize why people still talk about these old films.
It’s definitely not for the casual viewer who wants a quick thrill. It’s sticky. It’s messy. And honestly? It’s probably better for it. 👹
