If you're into old-school melodrama where the lead character has the self-awareness of a goldfish, you’ll probably have a decent time. If you get annoyed by watching someone throw their life away for a guy who isn't even worth a second glance, you’ll be screaming at the screen. Honestly, it’s a bit of a relic, but it has a weird, quiet charm that kept me watching until the credits rolled.
Madeleine Renaud is incredible as Mistigri. She carries this thing on her back, even when the plot starts feeling like it’s just spinning its wheels in the mud. Her face tells you everything the script forgets to mention, especially when she’s looking at this guy like he’s a gift from heaven while he’s clearly just… not.
The guy she's chasing? A tenor who thinks he's the center of the universe. He’s so vain it’s almost impressive, like he’s practicing his smoldering look in a mirror while the house is burning down. It’s painful, but also kinda funny if you’ve ever known someone who just can’t see the truth right in front of them.
There’s a scene about halfway through—I think near the train station—where the pacing just dips. It’s almost like the director forgot to yell 'action' and everyone just stood there for a few seconds too long. It felt raw, maybe a bit unfinished, but I liked that it wasn't perfectly polished. It felt like watching a play where the lead actor suddenly remembers they left the stove on.
It’s not as punchy as A Fight to the Finish, which had a lot more going on in terms of pure adrenaline, but it’s got a different kind of pull. It’s smaller. More pathetic, in a way that feels real.
The whole thing feels like a fever dream of a small-town girl who just wants something bigger, even if that 'bigger' thing is total garbage. You want to shake her, but you also kinda root for her to just realize she’s the one actually doing the 'shining' while he’s just taking up space.
Small things I noticed:
Is it a classic? Maybe in some circles. For me, it’s just a reminder that being in love can make you look like a total buffoon. We've all been there, right? Maybe not to this extreme, but the feeling is universal.
