If you have a thing for black-and-white domestic dramas from the era where everyone spoke like they were reading off a stage prompt, sure. People who hate movies where 90% of the runtime is just people sitting in living rooms complaining about their feelings should probably skip this. It’s not exactly The Lone Trail in terms of excitement.
Georg Wall is an architect. You can tell because he spends a lot of time looking vaguely annoyed in a very large, expensive-looking apartment. He’s waiting for his wife, Lola. He’s been waiting since lunch. It feels like he’s been waiting since the invention of the telephone, honestly.
When Lola finally shows up, she isn't interested in dinner or small talk. She wants a divorce. That’s the whole setup. It’s simple, maybe a little too simple, like a theatrical play that forgot to leave the stage.
There is a specific kind of stillness in Modärna fruar that feels heavy. It’s not the tense, creeping dread you might get in something like The Wolf at the Door. It’s just... quiet. The furniture looks uncomfortable. The characters look like they are constantly trying to remember their next line.
I found myself staring at the background decor more than the actors at one point. There’s a vase in the corner that seems to get more screen time than some of the supporting cast. Does it matter? Not really. But it’s the kind of thing you notice when the dialogue starts looping back on itself for the third time.
Edvin Adolphson is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. You can see him trying to inject some actual life into these scenes, but the script is just so determined to be polite and orderly. It’s like watching a polite argument at a dinner party where nobody is allowed to raise their voice.
It’s not a bad film, just a very contained one. If you’re in the mood for something that moves at the speed of a dusty clock, you’ll be fine. Just don't expect it to change your life. It feels almost as static as Fifty Candles in its own peculiar way. 🕰️
It’s a bit of a relic. Kind of charming, kind of a chore. Pick your poison.
