5.5/10

A definitive 5.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Molly Moo-Cow and the Butterflies remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you enjoy early animation that looks like it’s vibrating off the page, you might find some charm here. If you’re looking for a coherent story or pacing that doesn’t feel like a fever dream, steer clear. It’s a very specific vibe that definitely isn't for everyone. 🐄🦋
Molly Moo-Cow is a strange character to hang a story on. She’s just… there, wandering through the landscape. When the butterflies get nabbed, the urgency is basically nonexistent. It’s like watching a gentle stroll that accidentally turned into a rescue mission.
The butterfly collector is the quintessential villain. He’s got that classic, exaggerated silhouette that makes you wonder if he’s even capable of walking in a straight line. There’s a moment where he traps the butterflies, and the animation gets strangely choppy, almost like the film itself is giving up on the scene.
It’s hard not to compare this to other stuff from the era, like the vibe you get in Old Mother Hubbard. Everything from that time has this weird, flickering quality. It’s charming, sure, but it’s also exhausting after a while.
There’s this one sequence where the butterflies are trying to escape, and the collector just stands there looking confused. The scene goes on for about ten seconds too long. You can almost feel the movie trying to convince you that this moment has actual stakes. It really doesn’t.
Compared to something like Smarty, this feels like it’s operating on a different frequency entirely. It lacks that sharp, snappy timing. It’s just kind of floating along, much like the insects in question.
I wouldn’t say I hated it, but I definitely felt like I was watching something that belonged in a museum exhibit rather than a living room. It’s a curiosity. A bit of fluff. Sometimes that’s enough, I guess. But if you blink, you’ll miss the only part where anything actually happens. 🤷♂️
