6.2/10

A definitive 6.2/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Mother Goose Melodies remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you're into the history of animation, absolutely. It's got that classic, rubbery movement that makes you wonder how they even drew it back then. But if you hate nursery rhymes or can't stand songs that repeat themselves, you'll probably want to skip it.
Honestly, watching Mother Goose Melodies feels like opening a dusty book that started screaming at you. It’s loud, it’s colorful, and it doesn't really have a plot beyond 'look at this character, now look at this one.' It moves fast, almost like the animators were on a sugar rush.
Old King Cole is... well, he's huge. Like, distractingly huge. He just sort of sits there singing while everything else happens around him. And his fiddlers? They're the Three Blind Mice. I mean, sure, why not? It’s the kind of logic that only exists in these early cartoons.
The transition where the sheep falls into the mud and turns into Baa Baa Black Sheep is actually pretty clever, even if it happens in the blink of an eye. I had to rewind it just to make sure I wasn't seeing things. It’s one of those little details that makes you respect the craft behind all the chaos.
The pie scene with Little Jack Horner is a bit of a mess, though. I counted the birds, and I'm pretty sure there aren't twenty-four of them in there. But maybe that’s just me being nitpicky. It’s a cartoon, not a math textbook, right?
Sometimes the rhythm feels a bit like Alice the Lumberjack in its frantic energy. Everything is constantly bumping into everything else. It lacks the weird, dramatic weight of something like Castigo de Dios, but it’s definitely more fun to watch on a rainy morning.
The whole thing ends up being a bit exhausting. It’s just non-stop nursery rhymes until you kind of forget what rhyme you're even on. Hey Diddle Diddle shows up at the end like an afterthought. It's cute, but it's a lot.
It’s not a masterpiece, but it’s a neat little time capsule. Just don't expect it to change your life or anything. It's just a bunch of drawings singing, and sometimes that's enough. 🎶
