6.1/10

A definitive 6.1/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Murder on Diamond Row remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Should you watch Murder on Diamond Row? If you have a soft spot for grainy, black-and-white British noir where the shadows are thicker than the plot, then yes, pour yourself a drink and dive in. If you get annoyed by characters who seem to exist only to walk through doorways and deliver exposition at a frantic pace, you’ll probably want to turn this off by the fifteen-minute mark.
It’s one of those movies that feels like it’s constantly trying to catch its own tail. Edmund Lowe plays the inspector with this tired, heavy-lidded look that actually works pretty well, even if he feels a bit out of place. He’s hunting Sebastian Shaw, who is supposedly this mastermind criminal. But honestly? Shaw mostly just looks like he’s trying to remember his lines while standing in dim lighting.
The London sets have this weird, stage-play claustrophobia. It’s not necessarily bad, just odd. Sometimes you catch a background extra staring directly into the camera lens, looking like they just realized they left the stove on at home. It’s charming in a 'nobody cared about continuity back then' kind of way.
There is a scene involving a diamond sale that goes on for a lifetime. The pacing drags so hard you can practically hear the clock ticking on the wall. I found myself looking at the floor patterns instead of the screen. Then, suddenly, someone gets hit, and the whole energy shifts for exactly thirty seconds before going back to people whispering in smoky rooms.
I couldn't help but compare the general 'who-is-doing-what' confusion to something like Three Spinsters, where the stakes feel personal even when the plot is thin. Here, the stakes are just 'diamonds,' which makes it hard to care if anyone actually survives.
It’s not a masterpiece. It’s not even a particularly great mystery. It just exists. It’s a rainy Tuesday movie. If you’ve seen The Squaw Man or other vintage curiosities, you know exactly the kind of dusty shelf this belongs on. Don't expect to remember much of it by tomorrow morning, but you won't hate yourself for finishing it. 🕵️♂️
