6.3/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 6.3/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Musical Justice remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like old-timey musical shorts that feel like they were made in a blender, sure. You’ll probably love it if you’re a fan of weird, early animation history. If you hate stuff that makes zero sense, stay away.
Musical Justice is one of those things you watch and immediately wonder what the room smelled like when they filmed it. It’s got Rudy Vallee playing judge, which is exactly as awkward as you’d imagine.
The whole premise is just a loose excuse to have people sing. It’s not trying to tell a story. It’s just trying to get through the setlist.
The middle section feels like it drags on forever. I kept checking my watch, waiting for the pacing to pick up, but it just stays at this weird, mid-tempo trot.
Then, suddenly, Betty Boop shows up. It’s genuinely jarring. It’s like watching Battleship Potemkin and having Mickey Mouse wander into the Odessa Steps sequence. It’s not smooth, it’s not clever, it’s just there.
Watching Vallee interact with an animated character is… well, it’s certainly a choice. The compositing is rough. You can see the seams everywhere. Honestly, it’s kind of impressive how little they cared about making it look real. 🎷
There’s this moment where the music swells, and you can almost feel the movie trying to convince you that this is high art. It isn’t, but the effort is charming in a pathetic sort of way.
It’s not as gritty or socially aware as The Scar of Shame, obviously. It’s not trying to be. It’s just fluff.
I found myself staring at the background extras. Half of them look like they’d rather be literally anywhere else. One guy in the back row is barely keeping his eyes open. I feel you, buddy.
The whole thing wraps up so abruptly it’s almost funny. No resolution. No real ending. Just lights out. It’s not the worst way to spend a few minutes if you’re into the weird side of cinema history, but don’t expect a masterpiece. 🎬
