6.8/10

A definitive 6.8/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Muteki remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have the patience for a silent film that refuses to explain its own internal logic every five minutes, you might get something out of Muteki. It is quiet, gray, and often feels like it is holding its breath. If you need pacing, fast cuts, or a clear hero to root for, stay far away. This one will just bore you to tears.
I found myself thinking about Stella Maris while watching this, though they feel like they exist in different universes. Where that film has a certain theatrical charm, Muteki feels like a punch to the gut that you see coming from a mile away.
The 1870s setting in Yokohama is rendered with a heavy, dusty hand. You can practically taste the grit on the screen. The way the American colonizer moves through these spaces—like he owns the dirt under his boots—is genuinely unsettling. It is not a loud performance. It is just… arrogant. And that feels more real than any mustache-twirling villainy.
The kid? He is mostly just eyes. Big, terrified, hollowed-out eyes. There is a scene near the middle where he is cleaning some brass object, and the camera stays on him for what feels like three full minutes. The lighting changes on his face as he stares off into nothing. It felt almost voyeuristic, like I was watching something I wasn't supposed to see.
There is a segment toward the end where the action stops entirely to focus on a harbor view. I checked my watch. It went on way longer than necessary. Maybe the director just loved the set? Or maybe it was just a lazy cut. Either way, it broke the spell for a second, but then the misery started back up again.
It is definitely not as polished as Liebe macht blind, but it has a weird, jagged edge that I can't quite shake. It’s not a fun watch. It’s barely even a "movie" in the way we usually think of them. It’s more like a bad memory caught on film. 🎞️
Would I watch it again? Probably not. Am I glad I saw it? Yeah. It’s got a pulse, even if it’s a slow one.
