7.2/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 7.2/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Namdvili kavkasieli remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have zero patience for films where people just walk across landscapes and stare at the horizon, skip this one. It’s definitely for the crowd that likes their movies to feel like a dusty, half-forgotten book found in an attic. If you want something snappy, stay away. This isn't exactly Better Behave or any of those quick-cut thrillers.
The whole thing feels very… *lived in*. There’s a specific grit here, the kind you get when the camera lens hasn’t been wiped in a few hours. Dimitri Kipiani is doing a lot of heavy lifting with just his eyebrows. I swear, he says more in one squint than the entire script does in the first twenty minutes.
The scenery is absolutely the star, even if the film acts like it isn't. The way the light hits those rocks? It’s nice. It reminds me a bit of the mood in Devi gory, but way less concerned with being dramatic. Sometimes it feels like the movie just wants to hang out on a hillside for ten minutes and ignore the plot entirely. 🏔️
The pacing is, uh, let’s call it 'deliberate'. Or just slow. You catch yourself checking your phone, and then suddenly someone says something really sharp, and you’re back in. It’s a weird rhythm. It’s definitely not trying to impress you with fancy editing tricks.
It’s not perfect. Sometimes the dialogue feels like it’s being read from a teleprompter that’s slightly out of focus. But there’s a soul to it. It’s not trying to be the next big blockbuster. It’s just… existing. Kind of like how I felt watching The Seats of the Mighty, where you just go along for the ride and hope for the best.
If you’re looking for a plot that makes perfect sense, look elsewhere. If you want to feel like you’ve been on a long, slightly confusing hike in a foreign country, you’re set. 🎞️
