Honestly, it depends on how much patience you have for black-and-white dramas that don't really go anywhere fast. If you like the vibe of Le scandale or just want to see some old-school Prague charm, go for it. If you need a plot that moves like a bullet, you’re going to be checking your watch by the twenty-minute mark.
It’s a movie that smells like old books and wet cobblestones. It’s got that specific mid-30s energy where everyone is polite but clearly hiding something in their desk drawer.
The house itself is almost a character, which sounds like a cliché but it's actually true here. There's this one scene where a character just lingers by the window, watching the rain hit the street, and the silence is so heavy it’s practically loud. You can hear the film grain in the background, this steady hiss that reminds you how long ago this was all captured.
Adina Mandlová is in this, and she brings a weird kind of sharpness to her scenes. She’s the only one who looks like she knows she’s in a movie, while everyone else is just trying to live their life. It’s a fun contrast.
There’s a weird pacing thing that happens halfway through. The movie just decides to hang out at a cafe for way too long. Nothing of importance gets said, but it feels like the director just wanted to finish his coffee before moving on to the next shot. I kind of respected that, actually. It’s not like The Golem where every shadow matters. Here, things just are.
I found myself thinking about Cette vieille canaille while watching this. Maybe it's just the period clothes or the way people sit in chairs like they’re waiting for a train that isn’t coming. It’s a very specific kind of boredom—the kind that’s actually kind of nice.
Is it perfect? Not even close. The sound dips in and out, and there’s a recurring musical cue that started to drive me a little bit crazy by the end. Still, I liked it more than I probably should have. It’s just a house, just a street, just a day in Prague. Sometimes that's enough. ☕
