5.6/10

A definitive 5.6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Night Waitress remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like movies that move fast and don't care much for fancy setups, yeah, Night Waitress is a solid pick. It’s for the folks who get a kick out of dusty black-and-white crime dramas where everyone is either holding a cigarette or a grudge. If you need big budgets or fancy dialogue, you’re gonna hate this one. It's rough around the edges and knows it.
The whole thing feels like a sprint. You barely get to know Helen before she’s already being chased around a kitchen by guys who look like they’ve never had a good day in their lives. The way the plot just tosses her into the deep end without a floatie is kind of refreshing.
The movie is basically built on that classic "wrong place, wrong time" energy. Everyone is chasing a "valuable cargo," but honestly, the movie doesn't care much about what’s actually in the box. It just needs a reason for people to start throwing punches.
There’s this one scene in the diner that feels like it goes on just a second too long. You can see the extras in the background wondering when they can go home. It’s charming in a weird way, like the movie is just as tired as the characters are.
Seeing Anthony Quinn show up is always a treat, even if he’s doing the standard heavy lifting for a movie like this. It’s a far cry from the polish you’d see in something like The Ivory Snuff Box. It’s got more in common with the frantic energy of Taxi 13, honestly.
The pacing is a bit of a wreck, but that’s okay. It’s not like it’s trying to win any awards for storytelling logic. It’s just trying to keep the momentum going until the credits roll.
Don't go in expecting a masterpiece. It's just a decent way to kill an hour if you want something that feels like it was ripped straight out of a pulp novel. It doesn't overstay its welcome, and sometimes, that’s all I’m looking for. ☕
