5.4/10

A definitive 5.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. No dejes la puerta abierta remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, you really have to be in the mood for old-school, stage-bound theater-on-film to get anything out of No dejes la puerta abierta. It’s not for the casual Netflix scroller. If you’re a fan of early Spanish-language cinema or just really like watching people stand in doorways and look intensely dramatic for no reason, go for it. Everyone else? You’ll probably be bored within ten minutes. 🎞️
The whole thing feels like it was filmed in one weekend inside a single, slightly dusty house. The cast is huge, but they spend most of the time just sort of hovering around each other. It’s got that weird, stilted energy where everyone talks like they’re trying to be heard in the back row of a Broadway theater, even when they’re standing two feet away from each other.
There’s this one moment where someone is supposed to be terrified, but they just sort of widen their eyes and hold a candle very still. It’s hilarious in a way that I’m pretty sure wasn’t intended. You can almost hear the director yelling "more mystery!" from off-screen.
It’s not a masterpiece, and it doesn't try to be. It’s just a relic. Sometimes that’s enough. But man, the pacing is a real struggle. There’s a scene that goes on for an eternity where two people just walk in circles around a table. Why? I have no idea.
If you liked the vibe of The Outsider, you might appreciate how this film tries to build tension out of thin air. It doesn’t always succeed, obviously. But the effort is there. It’s a very specific type of old-world charm that just doesn't exist anymore.
Don’t go looking for deep character arcs here. You’ll be looking for a long time. It’s all about the mood and the weird, echoey sound of the dialogue. It’s imperfect. It’s clunky. But it’s definitely something you haven't seen a thousand times before.
