6.6/10

A definitive 6.6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. No matarás remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Look, if you have a soft spot for 1930s crime dramas, you might find something to like here. If you need snappy modern pacing or big-budget polish, you are going to be bored out of your mind within ten minutes. It's slow. It’s grainy. It feels like it was dragged out of a basement trunk, which is exactly why some of us will probably enjoy it.
The story is simple enough: a guy from Spain shows up in the U.S., can't find a job, and falls into the bootlegging scene. It’s the kind of premise that shows up in a dozen other movies, like Everything for Sale, but there’s a specific, desperate rhythm to how this one unfolds.
There is a scene near the middle where the protagonist stares at a crate of illicit booze for way too long. It’s meant to show his moral conflict, I guess, but it just feels like the actor forgot his lines for a second. I kind of loved it. It felt human, not like those perfectly blocked performances you see in modern stuff like AM to PM.
The cinematography is… well, it’s functional. Sometimes it feels like the camera is just sitting there hoping something interesting happens. You get these long, static shots of brick walls and street corners that don’t really do anything for the plot, but they sure do build a mood. It feels a bit like watching a cousin’s home movie, if your cousin was a 1930s gangster.
I found myself comparing it to the pacing in The Lonely Woman. Both movies have that habit of letting a moment go until it feels a bit awkward. Some viewers will call it bad editing. I call it an unintentional style choice that gives the movie a weird, lingering ghost-like quality. 👻
The dialogue is thick with that old-fashioned drama weight, but it doesn’t always land. Sometimes it feels like they’re shouting at the sky instead of talking to each other. Don't expect some deep, life-changing philosophy here. It’s just guys in suits doing bad things in dark rooms.
Would I watch it again? Probably not. Am I glad I saw it once? Sure. It has a dusty, authentic grit that feels like a time capsule. Just don't go in expecting a masterpiece, and you'll be fine.
