6.1/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.1/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. O' Schwarzwald, O' Heimat remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Look, if you are into old-school German cinema that feels like it was filmed in a living room, you might dig O' Schwarzwald, O' Heimat. It is cozy. It is weird. It is definitely not for anyone who needs a plot that moves faster than a slow-walking cow.
If you hate movies where people just sort of stand around and talk about the past while looking vaguely pained, skip this. It is not exactly a thriller.
The whole thing feels like a postcard that got left in the rain. Karl is just so tired, you know? You can see the exhaustion in the way he leans against doorways. He goes to the Black Forest expecting peace, but he gets a magician named Amadori instead.
Amadori is a total headache. He is broke, but he wears this confidence like a cheap suit that doesn't fit. Watching him pretend to be a mogul while he can barely afford a coffee is kind of painful, honestly. It reminds me of that same desperate energy you see in The Impersonation.
There is a scene where they are all sitting around a table and the silence is just heavy. It goes on for way too long. It feels like the actors forgot their lines and just decided to look at their soup instead. It is awkward, but kind of funny if you look at it the right way. 🌲
I kept thinking about Az utolsó bohém while watching this. There is that same sense of people just trying to hold onto a lifestyle that is clearly already dead. It is a bit sad, really.
The pacing is a total mess. It slows down to a crawl whenever someone starts talking about their childhood. I found myself checking my phone, which is never a good sign. But then, just when I was about to turn it off, there is a weird little interaction between Karl and Amadori that felt genuine. It is like the movie has these brief sparks of life before falling back asleep.
Is it a classic? No. Is it a disaster? Also no. It is just... a movie. It exists. It has some trees, some bad magic, and a lot of people talking about the old days. Sometimes that is enough for a rainy Tuesday night when you don't want to think too hard. ☕️
