4.5/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 4.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Outlaws of the Range remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a soft spot for 1930s B-Westerns, you’ll probably find something to like here. If you hate movies where the audio quality sounds like it was recorded inside a tin can, steer clear.
This is strictly for the folks who enjoy those Saturday matinee vibes. Don't go in expecting Tol'able David levels of craft, though.
The whole thing feels like it was filmed on a Tuesday afternoon when everyone involved was mostly just trying to finish by lunch. The fistfights are these weird, slow-motion slap-fests that look like the actors are trying to tickle each other into submission.
Steve Harper loses his gun, and the plot just kind of… happens. It’s not complex, and honestly, the movie doesn't want it to be. 🤠
The breakout scene is a highlight, mostly because it’s so incredibly easy. Jimmy Wilson just kind of wanders into the jail and, boom, Steve is out. Zero resistance.
I found myself zoning out during the dialogue scenes because, let’s be honest, they’re just filler between the next awkward tumble in the dirt. It’s not as polished as Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler, but it’s not trying to be either.
It’s a dusty, messy, and short watch. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need when you’re tired of modern stuff that takes itself way too seriously.
Watch it if you like hats. Wear a lot of hats in this one. 🐎
