You should probably only watch this if you have a real soft spot for those early 1930s movies where the sound feels a bit fuzzy. If you like Tom Tyler or you're a completionist for old Westerns, it’s worth a look. 🌵
Most people will find it a bit slow and the logic is definitely lacking. It’s not a masterpiece, but it has that weird charm of early cinema where nobody quite knew where to put the microphones yet.
The story starts with this playboy guy, Larry. He’s not a very likable fellow, honestly.
He kills his wife’s lover in a fit of rage and then just bolts for the West. It feels very sudden, like the movie couldn't wait to get out of the indoor sets and into the dirt.
Then we get the big twist, if you can call it that. Larry runs into the guy who was blamed for the killing back home.
What are the odds, right? Out of all the square miles of desert, they find each other.
It reminds me a bit of the vibe in West of Broadway, but with more dust. And less polished acting.
The acting is... well, it's 1931. Everyone talks like they are trying to announce a parade. 📢
Tom Tyler has this very stiff way of standing. He looks like he’s constantly posing for a photo even when he’s just supposed to be listening to someone talk.
There is a scene where they are sitting around a campfire and the shadows on the background look like they were drawn with a marker. It's kind of endearing in a way.
The dialogue is pretty clunky. One guy says something like "I'm a hunted man!" and he says it so loud I thought my speakers were going to pop.
I noticed a dog in the background of one shot that seemed way more interested in the camera than the actors. 🐶
It’s much more of a drama than an action movie. Don't go in expecting a lot of gunfights like you'd see in Mickey's Wild West.
The pacing gets really weird in the middle. They spend a lot of time just looking at the horizon and talking about their feelings in very simple terms.
"I didn't do it!" "I know you didn't!" That's basically the script for ten minutes.
The ending feels rushed, like they ran out of film or the sun was going down and they had to go home. It just sort of... stops.
I wish we saw more of the wife's reaction to everything, but she’s basically forgotten once the horses show up. It's a very male-heavy movie.
It’s definitely better than something like On the Trail of the Conquistadores, but that’s not saying much. It feels more grounded, even if the plot is silly.
One thing I realy liked was the costume for the playboy. He wears these pants that look incredibly uncomfortable for the desert.
You can see the sweat on the actors' faces. It looks hot. It feels real in that one specific way.
I wonder if they actually liked each other on set. Sometimes the silence between lines feels like they forgot what to say.
There's a lot of staring. Just... long, meaningful stares into the middle distance.
Anyway, it’s a decent enough way to spend an hour if you can't sleep. Just don't expect it to change your life or anything. 😴
If you want something with more energy, maybe try Bad Sister instead. This one is more for the people who like to sit and watch the dust settle. 🏜️
The whole thing feels like a stage play that someone accidentally filmed outside. It’s clunky and the transitions are non-existent.
But hey, it's short. And sometimes a short, mediocre Western is exactly what a Sunday afternoon needs. I guess.
