4.5/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 4.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Pechat vremeni remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a weird fascination with Soviet-era agitprop or just want to see how they used stop-motion to scare children, you might find Pechat vremeni worth a watch. Everyone else? You’ll probably hate it. It’s dry, it’s stiff, and it has absolutely zero chill when it comes to its message.
Watching this feels a lot like sitting through a long, uncomfortable lecture in a dusty classroom. The puppets aren't exactly Pixar quality, but that’s not really the point, is it? They have these painted-on expressions that look frozen in a state of permanent alarm. It’s actually kind of unsettling.
The whole premise is basically: don't talk to people you don't know. It’s heavy-handed, obviously, but there is something fascinating about how direct it is. It makes films like The Black Envelope seem like lighthearted romps by comparison. You can practically hear the filmmakers stressing that if you aren't careful, you're basically handing the keys to the kingdom to a spy.
It’s funny how, even in a movie about spies, everything feels so contained and small. It lacks the scope of something like Number 17, but then again, that’s clearly not what they were going for. They wanted to fit a whole political philosophy into a short runtime. Sometimes it works, mostly it just feels like someone shaking a puppet in your face and shouting 'BE VIGILANT!'
I found myself staring at the texture of the puppet clothes more than the actual plot. Why are they wearing such tiny, itchy-looking coats? It’s a very specific kind of 1930s aesthetic that feels miles away from the flash of La Belle Russe. The whole thing is just a weird, little time capsule.
Is it a cinematic masterpiece? Absolutely not. Is it a strange enough curiosity that I’m glad I watched it? Sure. It’s definitely not something I’d suggest for a Friday night popcorn flick, unless your friends are historians who enjoy shouting at dolls. 🧸🕵️♂️
