6.7/10

A definitive 6.7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Peter Vinogradof remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like movies that feel like a faded photograph found in an attic, maybe. This isn't exactly a high-octane drama. You’ll probably enjoy it if you have a soft spot for Soviet-era sincerity and stories about people just… trying. If you need a hook, a twist, or even a plot that moves faster than a brisk walk, you’ll hate it.
I didn't expect much, but there’s something about the way Peter says goodbye to Valya that stuck with me. It’s not grand or cinematic. It’s just kind of sad and quiet. Like he knows the city is going to change him, even if he doesn't want it to.
The move to Moscow feels less like an adventure and more like a grind. Working at a car factory during the day and hitting the books at night? That sounds exhausting. They don't really dwell on the misery of it, which is maybe the most unrealistic part. Everyone is just so determined.
There's a scene where they’re walking through a train station that goes on just a little too long. You can hear the echoes. It feels like the director wanted you to really feel the size of the city compared to their small town. It worked, but I kept checking my watch.
The acting is fine, I guess. Nothing jumps out and grabs you by the throat. It’s all very earnest. Vsevolod Sanaev has this look in his eyes sometimes that makes you think he’s seen the whole script and decided to just be himself instead. Maybe that’s just me projecting.
It’s a bit like watching The Sawmill in terms of that specific, labor-focused atmosphere, though clearly a different kind of beast. It lacks the punch of something like Sir Arne's Treasure, obviously. But then, it’s not trying to be a sweeping epic, is it?
It’s not a masterpiece. It’s just a movie about life being kind of heavy and kind of hopeful at the same time. I don’t think I’d watch it again, but I’m not mad I watched it once. Sometimes you need a film that doesn't scream at you.
It just kind of exists. A bit like the characters, really.
