5.6/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5.6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Phantom Thunderbolt remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, only if you’re into the kind of low-budget, black-and-white stuff that smells like old celluloid and saddle soap. It’s a classic B-western, meaning it's perfect for a rainy afternoon when you don't want to think too hard. If you're looking for deep character arcs or fancy camera work, you are going to be bored to tears within ten minutes.
Ken Maynard is in it, and he’s doing that thing he does where he rides his horse with more personality than half the supporting cast. The plot is about as thin as a piece of cheap parchment. Bad guys hate trains. Good guy likes trains. Someone gets punched in a saloon. You get the idea.
There's this one moment where a character walks into a room, and the lighting is so weirdly flat that he almost looks like a cardboard cutout. It’s charming in a 'did they even have a light meter?' kind of way. Then there's Tarzan—the horse, not the jungle guy—who clearly has better acting instincts than some of the humans standing around looking confused.
It’s funny, I was watching this and thinking about Six Feet Four, which has a similar vibe but feels a bit less rushed. Here, everything happens so fast you barely have time to notice who is shooting at who. It's just a constant cycle of shouting and galloping.
If you've seen The Fighting Parson, you know how these things usually go. It’s the same dusty towns, the same angry men with hats pulled low, and the same sense that nobody really knows what’s happening once the director yells 'action.' But there's something honest about that. It’s not trying to be a masterpiece.
The ending comes out of nowhere. It's like the film just hit a wall and decided to stop. No big emotional wrap-up. Just a fade to black and you're left staring at the screen wondering if the train ever actually made it into town. 🚂
Would I watch it again? Maybe if I’m really tired and need something that won't ask anything of me. It’s not great art, but it’s plenty for what it is.
