7.7/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 7.7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Pop Goes the Easel remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like the Three Stooges, you already know the answer is yes. If you get annoyed by people shouting, hitting each other with mallets, or wasting perfectly good art supplies, stay far away. This isn't high art, it's just pure, unadulterated slapstick.
The plot is basically just a thin excuse to get the boys into an art studio. They are running from a cop, stumble inside, and suddenly they're 'artists.' Watching Curly try to hold a palette like he knows what he's doing is the highlight. His face is just pure confusion.
The middle part of the movie is basically just them trying not to get caught while making a mess of everything they touch. There's this one moment where they’re trying to sculpt, and it’s genuinely funny how bad they are at it. Like, they don't even try to fake the technique. They just poke at the clay until it collapses.
It’s not as tightly wound as Roman Romeos, but it has a certain frantic energy. The pacing is weird, but in a Stooges way, where things happen just because they need to be funny right that second.
The cop is just there to be the punching bag, really. He’s the straight man in a room full of absolute chaos. You can see him trying to keep his composure while Larry is probably poking him in the eye or something. It’s simple, it’s loud, and it’s messy.
It doesn't try to be anything else. It's just a short burst of people hitting each other with mud. Sometimes, that's exactly what you need on a Tuesday night. 🎨
