6.8/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 6.8/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Porky the Rain-Maker remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Alright, so if you're looking for a deep, meaningful cinematic experience, this ain't it. But if you've got a soft spot for classic cartoons, especially the really old, zany kind, then Porky the Rain-Maker is definitely worth seven minutes of your time. If modern animation is your thing, or you need a tight, coherent plot, you'll probably just scratch your head.
The setup is pretty simple. Porky's farm is parched, the animals are all looking incredibly sad and skinny. He's sent off to get feed, which, you know, makes sense. But then, he comes back with "Weather Pills." 💊
Honestly, who sells weather pills? And who buys them instead of actual feed for starving livestock? Porky's decision-making skills are definitely questionable here. You can almost hear the movie saying, "Let's just get to the chaos, okay?"
And chaos, it delivers! The moment those animals swallow those little pills, things go absolutely bonkers. One pill brings snow, another brings lightning and thunder right over the barn. It's just a visual barrage of weather gone wrong. There's this one cow that starts skiing down a snowy hill, then immediately gets drenched by a sudden downpour. It’s a very fast-paced kind of madness.
The animators really went for it with the absurd reactions. The sheep, in particular, look so bewildered by the sudden snow. And the way the rain just keeps escalating, turning the farm into a complete flood zone, is pretty impressive for a cartoon from that era.
It's pure, unadulterated old-school slapstick. No real lessons learned, just Porky running around, trying to fix a mess he totally created. The ending is just a big splash, a final gag. It doesn't try to be anything more than that, which is kind of refreshing.
You can see the roots of so many later Looney Tunes gags here. It’s got that raw, energetic feeling of animators just having fun with wild ideas. And yeah, the sound effects are exactly what you'd expect: boings and crashes galore. 💥
So, yeah. If you're into vintage animation, give it a watch. It's short, sweet, and a little bit silly. Exactly what a classic Porky cartoon should be.
