A definitive 4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Powder My Back remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you're into those fast-paced silent comedies where a woman just decides to ruin a man's life because he’s a jerk, you’ll dig Powder My Back.
It’s not some big artistic masterpiece, but it’s fun in a way that modern movies usually aren't. People who hate 'theater kid energy' will probably find the main character annoying, though.
Audrey Ferris plays Fritzi Foy and honestly, she has this way of looking at the camera that makes you feel like you’re in on the prank. The mayor shuts down her show because he thinks it’s too 'spicy' or whatever. It feels like such a 1920s problem to have, doesn't it? 🙄
She decides to get him back by pretending to be someone else and getting him into a scandalous position. It’s classic stuff. I love the scene where she’s trying to get his attention and he’s just being so stiff and awkward.
The title comes from a scene where she asks him to powder her back. You can see him just melting. It’s hilarious how easily these 'moral' characters crumble the second a pretty girl smiles at them.
I was thinking about Fires of Youth while watching this. Mostly because of how much energy the young cast has compared to the stuffy adults.
Some of the gags go on a bit long. Like the bit with the car? It felt like it lasted five minutes too many. But Ferris is so charming you kind of don't care after a while.
I really wish we saw more of the actual musical comedy she was in before it got shut down. The tiny glimpses we get of the stage costumes are so flashy and cool.
It’s way more enjoyable than something like Phantom Justice. That one takes itself way too seriously for no reason.
The mayor’s son is also in the mix and he’s just... there. He’s fine, but he’s mostly just a prop for Fritzi’s big plan. I forgot his name about ten minutes after he showed up.
There is a weird moment with a hat that I didn't quite get. It felt like a joke was missing a setup, or maybe the film reel was just damaged there. 🎞️
Check it out if you want a quick laugh and some great 1920s fashion. It’s a nice little time capsule that doesn't overstay its welcome.
The ending is a bit rushed, but that's how these things go. It just stops once the point is made.
