4.3/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 4.3/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Puddy Pup and the Gypsies remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, only if you're a weirdo like me who digs through the bargain bin of animation history. If you want something that makes sense or feels modern, skip it. If you want to see a cartoon dog get absolutely bullied by a group of stereotypes, settle in.
The whole thing kicks off with this pup just trotting along, minding his business. It’s that classic, super bouncy animation style that makes everything feel like it's vibrating. Then he stumbles into the camp. And man, the vibe shift is immediate.
The way the characters move is kind of jerky. Like, they didn't have enough frames to make it look smooth so they just skipped the middle parts. It gives the whole thing this frantic, jittery energy that’s hard to ignore. 🐾
I found myself staring at the background art more than the actual plot. There’s a specific tree in the background of the camp scene that looks like it was drawn by someone who had never actually seen a tree before. It’s just this jagged, ink-blot mess.
It’s wild how quickly the tone goes from 'cute puppy adventure' to 'total chaos.' The locals start throwing things. And I mean a lot of things. It’s like a kitchen sink of animation gags just gets dumped on this poor dog.
It reminds me a bit of the frantic energy you see in Funny Face, though without the polish. It’s not trying to be high art, which is probably why it holds up as a weird curiosity.
Some people might find the whole premise a bit dusty. It’s definitely a product of its time. You can tell they were just trying to get to the next punchline as fast as possible, logic be damned. The pacing is less of a story and more of a series of things being thrown at a puppy.
Anyway, don't expect a masterpiece. Expect a weird, grainy, slightly mean-spirited cartoon that probably wouldn't get made today. And honestly? That's kind of its charm. It doesn't care if you like it or not. It just exists. 🐶
