4.9/10

A definitive 4.9/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Radio Racket remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Should you watch Radio Racket today? If you’re the type of person who digs through bargain bins at antique stores just to see what kind of weird stuff is hiding in the corners, then yeah, go for it. If you need clean, tight plotting and high-budget polish, you will probably find this thing incredibly irritating.
It’s a scrappy little flick. John Foster is working overtime here, and you can see him sweating the details even when the script doesn't give him much to hold onto. He’s got this nervous, twitchy energy that makes you feel like the whole production might just vibrate into pieces at any moment.
The pacing is… well, it’s mostly just fast. It doesn’t stop to explain anything. It assumes you already know why the radio station matters, or maybe it just doesn't care. Either way, you’re just dropped into the middle of the noise.
There’s a scene about midway through that feels like it was filmed in a closet. The lighting is super harsh, and the shadows are doing all the heavy lifting. I found myself staring at a loose piece of scenery in the background that kept wiggling every time someone slammed a door. It was way more interesting than the actual dialogue.
It reminded me a bit of the frantic, messy vibe you get in Black and Tan Mix Up, though it’s definitely its own beast. It lacks that specific punch, but it makes up for it by just being weirdly persistent.
I can’t tell if the sound mixing was intentional or if the equipment was just dying. There’s this persistent hum throughout the dialogue scenes that makes everyone sound like they’re shouting from inside a tin can. It’s annoying for five minutes. After that, it just becomes part of the texture.
Look, it’s not exactly Glorious Betsy. It’s not trying to be. It’s a Radio Racket—a loud, slightly broken piece of history that doesn't really know when to quit. I kind of respect that. 📻
Sometimes you just want to watch a movie that feels like it was put together by people who were running on caffeine and pure stubbornness. This is definitely that movie.
