7.4/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 7.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Ray of Sunshine remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like movies that feel like they were dug out of a dusty attic, then yes. It is slow, it is gloomy, and it does not try to be flashy. If you need a movie with a fast pace or a bunch of plot twists, you should probably skip this. It is mostly for people who like to watch characters just exist in a hard world.
The whole thing starts on a bridge. It is dark, it is wet, and you just know everyone is miserable. Hans is standing there, ready to jump, and then he sees Anna. It is the kind of coincidence that feels heavy-handed, but in this movie, it just kind of happens. No big speech, no music swell. Just a guy saving a girl because he’s got nothing better to do.
I kept thinking about New Year's Eve while watching this. There is a similar vibe of people being totally crushed by their own lives. Except here, the chemistry between the leads is actually weirdly sweet in a broken way. They don't have money, but they have each other, which is the classic trope, right? But it doesn't feel like a fairy tale. It feels like two people huddled under a blanket trying to stay warm.
There is a scene in a cafe that goes on for a long time. It’s mostly just them looking at bread they can’t afford. It felt oddly real, maybe even a bit boring, but that was the point. You feel the hunger.
The cinematography isn't trying to win any awards. It’s just functional. Sometimes the lighting is a bit flat, but honestly, it makes the whole thing feel more like a stage play than a big production. You can tell they were working with what they had.
It’s not perfect. The pacing stumbles in the second act when they start walking around the city. It’s a lot of walking. But then you get a look at the architecture of old Vienna, and you stop caring about the plot for a minute. It’s just nice to look at, even if it’s sad.
I don't know if I would watch it again. But I am glad I watched it once. It’s a quiet little ghost of a movie that doesn't demand much, but stays in your head for a day or two afterward. 🎞️
