5.8/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5.8/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Registered Nurse remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like old, frantic pre-code dramas that don't waste time on character development, you’ll probably have a good time here. It's not a masterpiece, but it's got a certain nervous energy that makes it hard to turn off. If you need logic and sensible people making sensible choices, stay away. This movie is built entirely on bad decisions and people shouting in hallways.
The whole thing feels like a fever dream set in a hospital wing. You’ve got this nurse, she’s trying to keep it together, but every man in the building seems determined to make her life a living nightmare. There’s a specific scene where the dialogue just starts flying back and forth so fast I had to rewind twice. It’s almost like the writers were paid by the exclamation point.
It’s nowhere near as grounded as Stand and Deliver, which actually cares about its characters' growth. Here, people just change their minds because the plot demands a new conflict. One minute someone is a saintly doctor, the next they’re acting like a total creep in the breakroom. It’s wild.
There’s a moment toward the end involving an operation that is completely ridiculous. They don't even try to make it look real. It’s just a guy leaning over a table while everyone else looks worried. You can almost feel the director thinking, "Yeah, that's good enough, let's go to lunch."
Is it better than Little Annie Rooney? That’s a stretch. It’s a very different kind of movie, obviously. But there’s a grit here that keeps you watching even when the script starts falling apart. It doesn't have the polish of the bigger studio pictures, but that's why it's kind of fun. It feels like a movie made by people who were just trying to get the job done before the lights went out.
Watch it if you’re bored on a Tuesday night and want something that doesn't ask much of you. Just don't go in expecting a medical documentary. You’ll be disappointed. 🏥
