You should probably skip this if you need a plot to stay awake. It is definitely for the people who enjoy staring at old photographs for way too long. If you want explosions or a three-act structure, you’re going to *hate* every second of this.
I found myself watching it late on a Tuesday when I couldn't sleep. It’s basically just footage of Santo Domingo as it was back then. No bells, no whistles, just the city breathing.
There is this one shot of a plaza that feels like it lasts for five minutes. You can see people in the background who clearly have no idea they are being filmed. They’re just living their lives, which is a lot more interesting than the staged stuff in The Loves of Letty.
Adam Sánchez Reyes is the name attached to this, but don't expect a big performance. It’s more about the texture of the film itself. The grain is so thick in some parts it looks like it’s raining inside the lens. 🌧️
I noticed a small dog running across a dusty street in one scene. It stops, looks at the camera for a second, and then just bolts. That felt more real than anything I've seen in a big budget flick lately.
There’s a moment where a man in a very stiff suit walks past and he looks so uncomfortable. It’s funny how people used to dress up just to walk down a dirt road. It reminded me of the awkwardness in A Man About Town, but without the jokes.
The film is pretty short, which is a blessing. If it were any longer, it would probably start to feel like a chore. As it is, it’s just a ghostly little trip through a city’s memory.
I think I liked it more because it didn't try to explain anything to me. There are no titles telling you where you are or why you should care. You just have to look. It’s much less stressful than trying to follow something like The Masks of the Devil.
Sometimes the film gets these weird white scratches on it. They dance around the screen like little insects. It’s distracting, but also kind of beautiful in a *broken* sort of way.
"It’s just the city, as it is. No more, no less."
Is it a masterpiece? Probably not. It’s barely a movie. But I’d rather watch this than another generic remake of When the Cat's Away.
Give it a go if you’re in a quiet mood. Just don't expect it to do the work for you. You have to bring your own curiosity to the table with this one. 🕯️
