A definitive 5.7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Sinner Take All remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like those snappy, black-and-white mysteries where everyone is wealthy and everyone is hiding something, you’ll dig this. It’s got that classic 1930s vibe—plenty of cigarettes, fast talk, and people getting bumped off in rooms with heavy curtains.
If you hate movies where the plot moves faster than the character development, you’ll probably find this one a bit thin. It’s a B-movie, through and through. But honestly? That’s part of the charm. It doesn't pretend to be The Betrothed or some grand epic.
The whole thing kicks off with these ominous letters hitting the mailboxes of a rich family. It’s the kind of setup that feels like a board game come to life. You know someone’s going to get it, and you’re just waiting for the screen to shift.
Bruce Cabot is in this, and he carries that specific kind of tough-guy energy that makes you think he’s either the hero or the guy who stole the silverware. He’s playing a lawyer with a background as a reporter, which is a nice little touch. It gives him an excuse to run around and yell at people in office buildings.
The twist about the girlfriend is… well, it’s a twist. Does it make total sense? Maybe not if you stop to think about it for more than ten seconds. But the movie doesn’t give you time to think. It just keeps shoving you toward the next scene.
There’s this weird sense of urgency that’s totally misplaced, like the director was worried the film stock was going to expire before they finished shooting. It works, though. It keeps the tension high even when the plot holes start looking big enough to drive a Model T through.
I found myself wondering if this would pair well with something like College Coach for a weird double feature. Maybe not. It’s definitely got more of a punchy, noir-lite feeling than anything else.
Don't expect some deep, life-changing experience here. It’s just a solid, slightly messy mystery that knows exactly what it is. And honestly, I respect that. It’s a quick watch, a fun ride, and it gets the job done before you even realize you’ve finished your popcorn. 🕵️♂️
