6.2/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.2/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Smart Work remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like old-school slapstick where the stakes are low but the shouting is high, sure. It’s a breezy watch for a rainy afternoon. If you need complex character arcs or modern pacing, stay away. This is pure 1930s fluff, and it doesn't try to be anything else.
Billy Dooley is the kind of guy who probably checks his own pockets for lost keys while holding them. He’s a private eye, but he’s really just a professional worrier. Watching him tail his own wife because he’s convinced she’s stepping out is… well, it’s frustrating, but in a funny way.
The whole premise is built on a pile of misunderstandings that would vanish if anyone just opened their mouth for three seconds. I found myself yelling at the screen, 'Just ask her!' but then, there wouldn't be much of a movie, would there? 🙄
The pacing is frantic. It’s like the editor was trying to finish the film before their lunch break. Sometimes the cuts are so sharp they feel like whiplash. There’s this one scene in a car lot that goes on for ages, but it’s mostly just people bumping into each other and looking confused.
It reminded me a bit of the frantic energy in Black and Tan Mix Up, though it lacks that specific bite. You can tell they were working with a shoestring budget and a lot of caffeine.
There’s a moment where Dooley is hiding behind a radiator, and it’s so cramped you can practically smell the dust. It’s silly, obviously, but it’s the most 'real' moment in the whole mess. He looks genuinely miserable, which is the only honest reaction to his own poor life choices.
Look, it’s not going to change your life. It’s not Glorious Betsy. But it’s a neat little time capsule of when people thought hiding in closets was the height of comedy. I’ve seen worse, and honestly, I’ve had worse Tuesdays. Grab a snack, turn off your brain, and let the chaos happen. Just don't expect a profound ending because it basically just stops when they run out of film. 🤷♂️
