5.9/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5.9/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. So ein Flegel remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like old-school German cinema or just have a weird itch to see how they handled the 'class clown' trope way back when, go for it. People who need modern pacing or fancy camera work will probably check out after ten minutes. It’s definitely not Alice in Wonderland, but it has its own dusty charm.
The whole premise hinges on Hans Pfeiffer being this super serious, stuffy writer. He’s the kind of guy who probably irons his socks. Watching him try to blend in with a bunch of high school kids is basically the entire movie, and it’s mostly played for laughs that land about 60% of the time.
Heinz Rühmann is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. You can see him trying to make the transition from 'stiff adult' to 'kidding senior' look natural, but it feels like he’s wearing a suit that’s two sizes too big. There’s a specific scene where he suddenly decides to be the teacher’s pet, and the way the other students stare at him is actually pretty funny. It’s like they’re waiting for him to break character.
Honestly, the movie feels a bit like a rough draft. It doesn’t have the polish you’d expect from something that clearly wanted to be a big hit. Some of the side characters are just there to stand in the background and look confused, which, honestly, fair enough.
It’s a bit of a weird artifact. It feels less like a movie and more like a captured stage play that someone decided to film on a lark. Sometimes a character will just look directly into the lens for half a second too long. It’s distracting, but I kind of loved it. It’s like they were checking to see if the film was still rolling.
There’s none of the heavy, dark energy you find in something like Two Monks. It’s light, it’s fluffy, and it’s completely unbothered by its own lack of depth. Sometimes that’s enough. Just don’t go in expecting a life-changing experience.
I found myself zoning out during the teacher scenes, but then someone would trip or say something unintentionally bizarre, and I was back in. It’s a messy little movie. I think I like it more for its flaws than for the actual story. It’s definitely not going to change your life, but it’s a nice way to kill an hour if you’re in a mood for something vintage and slightly broken.
