5.4/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. So This Is College remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Is this worth watching today? Honestly, yeah, if you have a soft spot for vintage vibes and people saying "old man" every five seconds. It’s perfect for anyone who wants to see what college looked like before everyone had a phone in their hand. People who want a serious, gritty sports drama will probably hate it though. 🏈
It’s mostly about Biff and Eddie. They are roommates who seem to share everything, including a very cluttered dorm room that actually looks like a mess.
Then Babs shows up. She’s a freshman and a "flapper," which in 1929 basically meant she wore cool hats and made every guy in a ten-mile radius lose their minds.
Robert Montgomery plays Biff, and he’s got this smirk that feels weirdly modern. He’s effortlessly cool, while the other guy, Eddie, just looks stressed out most of the time.
There is this one scene in their room where you can see all these old pennants and junk on the walls. I love that it doesn't look like a clean movie set; it feels like a real, dusty place where two guys actually live. 🧥
The plot isn't exactly deep. They both want the girl, they start acting like jerks to each other, and it almost ruins the big game against Stanford.
Speaking of the game, it’s actually pretty cool to see the USC Trojan Marching Band doing their thing. It feels like the director just pointed the camera at a real event and let it roll.
Cliff Edwards shows up too—you might know him as the voice of Jiminy Cricket. Here, he’s playing a character named "Pansy" and he’s got his ukulele, obviously.
He does this high-pitched singing that goes on about 30 seconds too long. You can tell they were just excited that they could finally record sound in movies, so they didn't know when to stop. 🎶
It’s not as polished as Hard-Boiled Haggerty but it has alot more heart in its own goofy way. There’s a strange shot of a guy just eating a sandwich that lingers way too long, and I have no idea why it's there.
The football scenes are a bit of a scramble. It's hard to tell who is who once they put the leather helmets on, but the energy is high.
I guess Babs is supposed to be the prize, but she doesn't really do much. She’s just there, being the reason the boys are fighting. 🤷♀️
The way they talk is so fast. It's like they’re trying to fit as many words as possible into the microphone before it breaks.
If you've seen Home Talent, you'll recognize that specific brand of early 20s comedy, but this feels a bit more grounded. Or at least as grounded as a movie about guys in raccoon coats can be.
I caught myself smiling during the hazing scenes. It all feels so innocent and silly compared to how college is portrayed now.
The ending is pretty much exactly what you’d expect. No big twists, just a lot of cheering and people being friends again.
It’s a comfy watch. Like a warm blanket that smells just a little bit like mothballs. 🎓
