4.4/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 4.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Social Error remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a soft spot for grainy, low-budget movies from the era where 'college delinquency' meant stealing a convertible and getting into a fistfight, maybe. It’s definitely not for anyone who needs logic to drive a plot. You’ll probably hate this if you get annoyed by characters who make life-ruining decisions just to keep the story moving forward.
The whole thing feels like it was put together on a lunch break. Our lead, a guy who seems allergic to staying out of trouble, hits every cliché in the book before the first act is even wrapped up. Honestly, watching him get expelled felt more like a relief than a tragedy.
Then things get weird. Suddenly, he's in a position to save a kidnapped heiress. It’s a total 180-degree turn that the movie doesn't really earn, but hey, the pacing doesn't give you time to think about that anyway. It reminded me a bit of the frantic energy in Sensation Hunters, just without the polish.
There's a scene near the middle where the pacing just hits a wall. The actors are standing around in a room that looks like it's missing half the furniture. It’s charming in a 'we ran out of money' kind of way, I guess? It’s not quite the level of drama you’d find in The Payment, but it’s got its own frantic vibe.
I wouldn't call this a hidden gem. It’s more like a dusty rock you found in the backyard. You pick it up, look at it for a minute, and then put it back down because you’ve got better things to do. But if you’re deep into the archives, there’s worse ways to spend an hour. 🤷♂️
