5.2/10

A definitive 5.2/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Somebody Stole My Gal remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like black-and-white comedies that feel like they were filmed on a Sunday afternoon with zero budget, then yeah, sure. This is perfect for anyone who hates modern, loud cinema and just wants to see people wearing hats and talking fast. If you need explosions or deep emotional arcs to stay awake, skip it. You will probably hate how predictable it is. Honestly, it’s not trying to reinvent the wheel, which is its best quality.
Billy Murray is doing his thing here, and it's delightfully frantic. The whole premise—a regular family getting rich and suddenly forgetting how to act like humans—is as old as time, but there's a certain charm to the way they lean into the absurdity. I kept waiting for a moment of genuine drama, but the movie was too busy trying to find another joke about a misplaced check or a snooty neighbor. It’s fine, really. I didn't need it to be more than that.
There is this one scene in the living room where someone is trying to hide a stack of cash behind a dusty lamp. The framing is so tight that you can see the actor’s eyes darting toward the camera, waiting for the signal to keep talking. It’s imperfect. It’s glorious. It reminded me a bit of the frantic energy in Fireman Save My Child, though maybe a little less focused on the slapstick.
I wouldn't compare this to something like The Road to Ruin, which had a bit more of an edge to it. This is strictly fluff. It’s like eating popcorn that’s a little stale but still tastes good because you’re hungry. The movie doesn't really have a 'message' or a 'lesson' to teach you, and honestly, that’s refreshing. It just wants you to laugh at a guy losing his hat. 🎩
The dialogue moves at a clip that makes your head spin. Sometimes it’s snappy, other times it’s just noise. But hey, it’s a quick watch. You don't have to invest your whole evening into it. Just don't expect it to change your life or anything.
