7/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Spooky Hooky remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have any soft spot for the Our Gang shorts, then yes. It’s a perfect slice of childhood panic. But if you hate watching kids scream and run around in circles for ten minutes, maybe skip this one. It’s loud, it’s frantic, and it’s deeply silly.
The whole premise is built on the kind of logic only a kid could come up with. They write a fake note to get out of class, then find out their teacher is taking them to the circus anyway. It’s the ultimate irony. Watching them scramble to retrieve that note from the teacher's desk is pure gold.
Spanky is in his element here. He’s always the one with the 'plan' that’s destined to fall apart. You can see the gears turning behind his eyes when he realizes they’ve played themselves. It’s not exactly Road to Rio in terms of scale, but the energy is definitely there.
There’s a specific bit involving the teacher’s desk that feels like it goes on forever. The suspense isn't exactly high-stakes, but for these kids, it’s the end of the world. I found myself rooting for them even though they clearly deserve the trouble they’re getting into. 🤡
Little details that stuck out:
It’s funny how this feels more grounded than the stuff we see today. No fancy effects. Just a bunch of kids in a room trying not to get caught. It’s messy, sure. The editing jumps around like the kids themselves. But that’s the charm, isn't it?
Sometimes you just need a movie that doesn't try to solve the mysteries of the universe. Spooky Hooky is just a reminder that being a kid is mostly about trying to get away with stuff and failing miserably. It reminded me a bit of the frantic pacing in The Fuller Gush Man. Just pure, unadulterated chaos.
Don’t go in expecting a masterpiece of storytelling. Go in for the slapstick. The moment they realize they actually wanted to be in school today is worth the price of admission. Or, you know, the time it takes to watch it. Whatever.
