6.1/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.1/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Springtime remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Alright, so if you’re scrolling through older cartoons and stumble on Springtime from 1929, give it a shot. It’s not gonna change your life, obviously. But if you dig classic animation, or just need a quick, genuinely cheerful few minutes, yeah, it’s worth watching. Folks who need a deep story or super slick graphics are probably going to be a bit bored, though.
It starts with all these flowers just swaying. They’re kind of doing their own little waltz. So simple, but really effective how they move.
Then you get the insects, buzzing around and twirling. And this crow family, they’re really the stars for a bit. There’s one little crow who keeps trying to mimic the bigger ones, and it’s kinda cute. 🐦⬛
The music, man, it just carries this whole thing. It's so bouncy, exactly what the description called a “jaunty tune.” It makes everything feel lighter, you know?
There’s a storm scene, but it’s super brief. Just a few quick flashes and some rain lines, then *poof*, sun’s back out. Almost like it never happened.
And then the big finale: grasshoppers, frogs, even a spider all get down to the 'Dance of the Hours.' The frogs leap with such exaggerated joy. 🐸 The grasshoppers do these ridiculous, springy jumps. It’s just so much energy from them all.
You can tell the animators were just having a blast figuring out what they could make move. The way the leaves rustle, even some little ripples in the water, those tiny details make it feel kinda alive. It’s not trying to be some grand epic. It’s just a really sweet, animated musical number. And for that, it works, pretty well actually.
The movements are a bit rough around the edges sometimes, but honestly, that’s a huge part of the charm of these early shorts. It really makes you appreciate how much hand-drawn animation changed over the years.
There was this one flower, a poppy I think, it just did this *really* exaggerated bow. It just stuck with me for some reason. The way it bent over.
It ends before you're quite ready for it to, just a few minutes, then it’s done. But you’re left with a little smile, which is kinda the point, right? 🌻
