5.6/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5.6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Stolen by Gypsies or Beer and Bicycles remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly? Only if you have a very specific, weird itch for silent-era absurdity. If you like your movies to make sense, steer clear. But if you’re the kind of person who enjoys watching people bike around in circles while someone gets kidnapped by a guy in a cape, welcome home. 🚲🍻
The whole thing feels like it was written on a dare. Sinclair Sable is such a mustache-twirling villain he might as well be tying Benecia to some train tracks, even if there aren't any trains around.
The Beer and Bicycle Club. I mean, just the name alone. It sounds like a group of guys I’d avoid at the local pub, but here they are, our heroes. They spend half the movie looking confused and the other half pedaling away like their lives depend on it.
There’s a strange energy in the way these guys move. It’s not graceful. It’s just... frantic.
The pacing is all over the place. One minute you’re watching a kidnapping, and the next, it’s just guys on bicycles. It’s not quite the level of chaos you get in The Part Time Wife, but it’s close. Sometimes a scene lingers on a bicycle wheel spinning, just spinning, for way too long. I started wondering if the projectionist fell asleep.
The acting is very... large. Everyone is pointing at things or looking shocked by things that are clearly not there. It’s charming in a way, I guess? It’s not exactly The City Without Jews, that's for sure. It’s much goofier.
I found myself getting distracted by the background extras. There's this one guy in the back of the second act who seems to be trying to steal the scene just by walking in a straight line. He fails, but I respect the effort. 🤷♂️
Is it a masterpiece? No. Is it a weird historical footnote that makes you wonder what people were drinking back then? Absolutely. It’s definitely not as weird as The Fungi Cellars, but it’s got its own strange, fermented charm. Watch it if you’re bored, or if you just really, really like bicycles. 🚲
