If you are a fan of early talkies or you're curious about how Hollywood made movies for Spanish speakers back in the day, give it a go. It is a bit slow for most people today, so if you need explosions or fast talking, you will probably be bored to tears.
I found myself staring at the background sets more than the actors sometimes. The rooms look so empty, like they just moved in and hadn't bought any furniture yet. 🪑
Luz Segovia plays Enriqueta, and she has these huge, expressive eyes. She doesn't have to say much for you to know she’s miserable about her dad’s plans.
The father is played by Ernesto Vilches, and man, he is loud. He moves his hands around so much I thought he might accidentally hit another actor in the face. 👐
It’s one of those movies where the plot is basically just people talking in rooms about things that happened off-screen. It reminds me a bit of the stiff energy in Half Way to Heaven from around the same time.
There is a scene in a hotel where the sound gets really fuzzy for a minute. I think the microphone was too far away, or maybe someone bumped it. It adds a weirdly human touch to a movie that feels very scripted.
The story isn't exactly groundbreaking. A girl wants to marry for love, and her dad wants her to marry for a bank account. 💰
I noticed the credits list five writers for this. Five writers! That seems like a lot of people for a story this simple.
Some of the dialogue feels like it was translated a bit too literally from English. People don't really talk like that, even in 1931. It has that same awkward rhythm you see in The Face in the Fog sometimes.
The costumes are actually pretty sharp. The suits look heavy and the dresses have that shiny, satiny look that only looks good in black and white.
I liked the way the movie handles the ending, even if it feels like it happens in about two minutes. One second they are arguing, and the next, everything is just... sorted out? It’s very abrupt. ⏱️
It isn't a masterpiece, but it’s a neat little window into a time when Hollywood was still figuring out how to talk to the whole world. It feels a bit like a rehearsal for a better movie that never got made.
Didja notice?
If you liked the vibe of A Diplomatic Mission, you might find something to enjoy here. Just bring a snack because the pacing is definitely from a different century. 🍿
