6.5/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Sweepings remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, only if you have a thing for black-and-white dramas that take themselves way too seriously. If you get bored when people just talk for ten minutes in a row, stay far away. It’s for the folks who like those old-school family sagas where everyone is miserable in expensive clothing.
Lionel Barrymore is at the center of Sweepings, playing a guy named Daniel Pardway. He builds a department store from the ground up, and honestly, the way he looks at his store is more romantic than anything he does with his actual family. You can tell he’s the type who would choose a ledger over a birthday party.
Then there are his kids. Oh boy. They are all just... remarkably unimpressive. They grow up rich and seem to have absolutely no idea what to do with themselves, which is obviously the whole point of the movie. It’s like watching a train wreck in slow motion, except the train is made of silk ties and bad attitudes.
I couldn't help but think about how different this feels compared to something like Are These Our Children. That one had a different kind of chaotic energy, whereas this one is just a slow, heavy march toward disappointment. Everything feels heavy.
The pacing is a bit weird. It zooms through years at a time and then suddenly hits the brakes to show someone looking sad in a window. It’s not smooth, but that’s kind of the charm, I guess? You get the sense that the director was just trying to get the story out before the lights went off.
I keep thinking about the final act. It’s supposed to be this big emotional payoff, but I mostly just wanted to see if anyone would finally stand up to the old man. Nobody really does. It’s a bit of a bummer, but not in the way the movie probably intended.
It’s not a masterpiece, and it’s certainly not for everyone. But if you’re curious about how movies used to handle the whole "rich family problems" trope, it’s worth a look. Just don’t expect a happy ending. Or a fast one. 🎥
