5.3/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5.3/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Tango remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, only if you have a weird itch for 1930s soap opera logic. If you like your movies fast-paced or logical, stay far away. But if you dig the specific brand of grit found in something like The Man Who Came Back, you might find a crumb or two here.
The whole premise hinges on a husband who just decides his wife is cheating without, you know, checking. It’s the kind of impulsive, irrational decision that feels very "movie-land" and not very "real-life." 🙄
Watching the wife struggle is bleak. She goes from a stable home to a dance hall pretty fast. The transition feels a little rushed, like the writers just wanted to get to the dancing part.
There is this one shot of her feet while she's practicing that goes on way longer than it needs to. It’s almost hypnotic, in a weird way. Maybe the director just really liked the shoes?
It reminds me a bit of the mood in Closed Doors, where everything feels just a little bit too tight. You can tell the budget was basically three nickels and a handshake.
The emotional beats don't land. The husband comes back or doesn't, and I found myself just wondering what they were serving for lunch on set that day. It's a thin movie, honestly. It’s barely there.
Still, it’s a time capsule. People dressed up, acted out this heavy stuff, and went home. You watch it and you feel the distance of the years, that layer of dust on the film stock that makes everything look a little ghost-like. 📽️
Don't expect a masterpiece. Just expect a movie that knows what it is and doesn't try to be anything else. Even if what it is, is kind of forgettable.
