5.7/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5.7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Avenger remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Look, if you dig that crisp, black-and-white atmosphere where everyone talks out of the side of their mouth and wears a fedora like it's a personality trait, you'll have a blast. It’s perfect for a rainy Sunday when you want something that doesn't demand your soul. If you hate old-school pacing or need constant CGI explosions to stay awake, stay away. This is pure, unadulterated 1933 grit.
The whole thing moves like a freight train with a broken brake. There’s almost no fluff. Murray Kinnell does a solid job playing the guy who just wants his life back, but it's the shadows in the office scenes that really do the heavy lifting here.
It reminds me a bit of the punchy energy in The Gold Rush, though obviously in a completely different genre. Both films have that weird, magnetic charm where you forgive the technical hiccups because the characters feel so real.
There's this moment where our guy walks down the street and his hat is just... slightly crooked. It drives me crazy. But it also makes him feel like a real person, not a movie star. Maybe it's a choice? Or maybe he just had a long day on set. Who knows. 🕵️♂️
Anyway, don't look for deep meaning. Just watch the guy get his revenge. Sometimes a movie is just a movie, and that's okay. It’s not trying to change the world, just kill a few hours.
