6.5/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Burning Secret remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like movies that feel like a cold breeze in an otherwise stuffy room, yes. This is for people who appreciate character dynamics that don't need to explode to be effective. If you’re looking for a plot that moves at a breakneck pace or has a big, cinematic payoff, you will probably be bored out of your mind. It’s quiet. Sometimes, it’s too quiet.
The whole thing hinges on this awkward, looming sense that something is off. You’re watching this guy charm the mother, and it’s just painful. Not because it’s bad acting, but because you know exactly what he’s doing. The kid is just standing there, wide-eyed, thinking he’s made a friend. It’s like watching a train wreck in slow motion, except the train is made of manners and polite conversation.
There’s this one moment where the camera just lingers on the kid’s face. He’s processing something he shouldn’t have seen. It’s not a big dramatic reveal, just a subtle shift in his expression. It felt more honest than half the stuff I see in modern thrillers.
The hotel setting is also perfect. It has that specific, dusty vibe where everyone is trying to act like they’re having the time of their lives. But honestly? It looks a bit lonely. Reminded me a little of the atmosphere in Under Suspicion, where the environment itself feels like it’s judging the characters.
I caught myself getting frustrated with the mother. You want to reach through the screen and shake her. Or maybe tell the kid to go play somewhere else. But that’s the point, isn't it? The movie wants you to feel that helplessness.
It’s not perfect. Some of the scenes feel like they were stretched out just to reach a certain runtime. There's a bit of padding in the middle that could’ve been cut without losing the heart of the story. But then, right when I was about to check my phone, they pull you back in with a look or a sharp line of dialogue. Very effective.
I keep thinking about the final act. It doesn't give you the clean resolution you’re hoping for. It just sort of… ends. That’s probably the most human thing about it. Life rarely gives you a nice, tidy bow on these kinds of messes.
