If you like movies that feel like a dusty attic find, sure. Go for it. If you need pacing that doesn't feel like a horse pulling a cart uphill, maybe skip this one. It’s for the folks who get a kick out of seeing how 1930s dialogue sounds when everyone is trying to be tough but also super polite.
There is a scene where they are just standing around talking about horse lineage that goes on for a lifetime. I think I checked my watch twice before they even got to the stable. It’s not boring exactly, but it is definitely stuck in the mud.
The gambling ring guys are basically cartoon villains. You know the type. They wear suits that are two sizes too big and hover in the shadows like they’re waiting for a bus. Every time they whisper, I kept waiting for them to twirl a mustache. It reminded me a bit of the heavy-handed drama in Men of Chance, though with significantly less charm.
I noticed one guy in the background of the fair scene who just stares directly into the camera for, I kid you not, ten full seconds. It’s these little glitches that make the whole thing feel human. It’s not polished, and honestly, that’s why I liked it. It’s not trying to be The Girl of the Golden West. It’s just a story about a horse.
I wish the finale had more teeth. Everything resolves a little too neatly, like they were running out of film stock and just needed to get to the closing credits before the sun set. Still, it’s a decent way to kill an hour if you don't mind the crackle of old audio. 🐎
