5.8/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 5.8/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Eccentric Entertainer remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Look, if you have about seven minutes to kill and want to see something that shouldn't be physically possible, this is for you.
It is for people who like old theater history or just weird human tricks. People who need a 'plot' or 'special effects' will probably hate it and get bored immediately.
Sol Violinsky is the star here. He walks out, looks at the camera with a very serious face, and just starts going for it.
He plays the piano with his left hand. Then he plays the violin with his right hand at the same time.
It is not just random noise, either. It actually sounds like a real song, which is the wildest part of the whole thing.
The camera does not move. At all. It just sits there like a heavy wooden box watching him work.
You can tell he is a total pro because he barely looks like he is trying. His face has this 'yeah, I am doing this, what of it?' look the whole time.
It reminds me of those early sound shorts like Life in Hollywood No. 3 where everything feels a bit like an experiment.
The audio is kind of scratchy and loud. It has that 1929 hiss that makes you feel like you are listening through a very old tin can.
But you can still hear the talent. Even through the static, the music is actually pretty catchy.
There is a moment where he switches up the rhythm really fast. I honestly thought he might drop the violin for a second.
He does not, obviously. He is way too good for that.
It is weird seeing someone give 100% effort to a camera that is not even moving or zooming in. No cuts, no close-ups on his fingers, nothing.
Just Sol and his instruments. It is very raw and feels like you are sitting in the front row of a dusty theater.
I wonder what people back then thought of this. They probably thought he was some kind of wizard or something.
It is definitely more fun to watch than some of the drier movies from that era, like The Leavenworth Case which takes itself way too seriously.
Anyway, it is over before you even realize it started. It is a nice little slice of history that does not overstay its welcome.
If you like seeing people do things that look impossible, give it a look. 🎹🎻
