Summary
Eleanor Leavenworth, a poised yet beleaguered heiress, teeters on the brink of incarceration when the corpse of her affluent, bachelor uncle is discovered beneath the opulent arches of the family manor. The police, swayed by circumstantial evidence, move to bind her in shackles, while the household—comprising a reticent steward, a scheming cousin, a disillusioned governess, and a cadre of servants—each becomes a suspect in the labyrinthine investigation. Into this vortex of suspicion steps Raymond, a diligent attorney whose affection for Eleanor fuels his relentless pursuit of truth. Through meticulous interrogation, forensic observation, and a keen sense of human frailty, Raymond unravels the tangled motives, exposing the murderer’s confession and culminating in a desperate escape attempt that ends in a fatal plunge from the estate’s towering balcony.
