6.8/10

A definitive 6.8/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Gotham Rhythm Boys remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Look, if you are the type of person who likes to dig through the digital bins of cinema history, The Gotham Rhythm Boys is a weird little find.
It is a 1929 Vitaphone short, which means it is basically a music video from before music videos were even a thing.
You should watch this if you have ever wondered what it was like to stand in a room with three guys who are very excited about their new suits.
You should probably skip it if you can't stand the sound of a movie that sounds like it is being played through a tin can. 📻
The whole thing is basically just Murray Roth and his pals doing their act for a camera that does not move an inch.
It is so static it almost feels like a photograph that somehow learned how to sing.
I kept waiting for someone to walk across the frame or for the camera to zoom, but nope.
We are stuck right there in the front row for the whole nine minutes.
There is this one guy—I think he is the lead singer—who has this incredibly intense way of looking at the lens.
It is like he is trying to see into the future to check if we are still watching him in 2024.
(Sorry buddy, it took me a while to find you).
The songs are... fine, I guess? They are very of their time.
Lots of 'rhythm' and 'pep' and other words that people in 1929 liked to use to describe things that were slightly fast.
At one point, there is a harmony that goes a bit flat, and they just keep going like nothing happened.
I love that. No autotune, no re-shoots, just pure grammary of the moment.
If you messed up in 1929, you just lived with it forever on film.
It is a lot less polished than something like Shadows of the Past, which feels like it had a bit more of a budget or at least a plan.
But there is a raw energy here that I actually prefer over the stuff that tries too hard.
The 'Gotham' in the title makes it sound like Batman is going to show up, but it is just New York vibes.
Very 'vaudeville-meets-the-machine-age' stuff.
I noticed that the floor looks incredibly dusty under the studio lights.
Every time they tap their feet, I expect a little cloud of 1920s dust to kick up and make them sneeze.
It makes the whole experience feel very tactile and real, unlike the shiny CGI we get now.
Compared to a movie like Everywoman, this is practically a blockbuster in terms of pure entertainment value.
Mainly because it does not try to teach you a moral lesson about being a good person.
It just wants you to snap your fingers for a few minutes while the world burns outside.
There is a strange moment near the end where the lighting shifts slightly, like someone accidentally bumped a lamp off-screen.
Nobody reacts. They just keep smiling that fixed, slightly terrifying stage smile.
It is those little imperfect bits that make these old shorts worth it for me.
"You can feel the people behind the camera sweating while the 'Boys' try to stay in the light."
It is a bit like watching a high school talent show if the students were all grown men in three-piece suits and very shiny shoes.
If you have seen Secret Marriage, you know how stiff these early talkies can get.
But The Gotham Rhythm Boys has enough 'rhythm' to keep it from feeling like a total museum piece.
It is not 'important' cinema, but it is a real moment in time.
And honestly, sometimes I would rather watch nine minutes of this than a three-hour epic that takes itself way too seriously.
The audio crackle actually adds to the vibe after a while, like a warm blanket of static.
The way they harmonize is kind of fascinating too. It is that tight, nasal sound that you just do not hear anymore.
It reminds me of those old radio broadcasts where everyone sounded like they were speaking through a comb.
I also noticed that the guy in the middle seems to be the 'leader' but the guy on the left is doing way more work with his feet.
He is really trying to sell the 'rhythm' part of the title while the others just sort of sway.
Anyway, give it a look if you are bored and want to feel like you are in 1929 for a bit. 🕺
It is short, it is loud, and the pants are truly hilarious.
Just do not expect it to change your life or anything.
