5.5/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Headless Horseman remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you're into animation history or just want something short to kill ten minutes, this is worth a look. If you need modern polish or a coherent narrative, you’ll probably find this a bit of a slog. It’s definitely not for the 'everything must be perfect' crowd.
The whole thing feels like it was put together in a rush. There's this distinctly loose, jittery energy to the drawings that you just don't see anymore. Sometimes the characters seem to slide across the background rather than walk on it. It’s not smooth, but it’s got a personality that puts stuff like Bosko's Woodland Daze to shame in terms of pure weirdness.
Not really. The scariest part is watching how the proportions on Ichabod change every time he turns his head. One second he’s lanky, the next he’s built like a beanbag chair. It’s almost hypnotic.
It’s funny comparing this to a more serious drama like The Wasted Years. This cartoon doesn’t care about being 'profound' or 'meaningful.' It just wants to get to the jump scare. 🎃
There’s a moment where Ichabod is reading that book, and the way the pages flip is just... odd. It lingers for a heartbeat too long. You can tell they were trying to figure out how to transition from the book to the 'real' world, but they just sort of gave up and let the scene end abruptly. I actually liked that.
It’s not a masterpiece. It’s barely a complete thought. But there’s a genuine, unpolished charm here that makes it way more interesting than the corporate-approved stuff coming out these days. Just don't go in expecting a deep dive into American folklore.
